A There would be witches. B Hansel and Gretel would hunt them. And D I would emerge from the movie theater with the mixed feeling of annoyance at what I assumed would be its sexist, misogynistic subject matter and of satisfaction Jeremy Renner stars as Hansel, and where Hawkeye goes, I follow. It was never going to be perfect. And I would be remiss not to point out that, for all its virtues, the movie still makes prominent use of the Male Gaze; Gretel wears a tight corset over a low cut shirt for most of the movie, and her breasts are prominently displayed in many scenes and shots including some in which the camera cuts off her head but still gets her boobs on screen. Another scene shows her climbing out of bed, pantsless, and the camera is positioned in such a way that her legs take up most of the screen.

The Unexpected Feminism of HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS
Description: Spoilers I wasn't expecting anything deep or insightful or thought provoking when I went to see this. I really enjoyed it. It was fun and funny and it was fairly obvious that their tongues were firmly in their cheeks when they made this. I enjoyed the 'Middle Ages meets Steampunk' aspect and thought it was a nice touch that Hansel actually developed the sugar sickness - a. At least, none come immediately to mind.
When children mysteriously begin to disappear in one village, the team is summoned. Their arrival coincides with the suspicion of witchcraft falling on Mina Pihla Viitala , whom Hansel believes is innocent. Roaming about in the wood unearths a coven of witches, with a dastardly plot involving sacrifices on the blood moon, led by Muriel Famke Janssen. Worse, she has a plan for Gretel that none of them anticipate, forcing Hansel, a local farm boy, and even a soft-hearted troll to go on a rescue mission. It knows not to take itself too seriously and simply allows its cast to have fun. It never professes to be a masterpiece or even particularly memorable. Witches are pummeled, blown up, shot full of holes, and explode into chunks. One has her head cut off with a shovel. There are a half dozen f-words.
